U.S. Nobel Prize Winner economist Paul Samuelson dies

December 13, 2009 by Susan Neilson

Ask Economics students about Paul Samuelson. I bet they would recognize that name immediately. His textbook, “Economics, ” first written in 1948, and revised regularly (19th edition out now) by Samuelson and others,  is a mainstay and definitive work on economic theory. It not only changed the way the subject was taught in schools, but how it was understood by the world.

Samuelson won the Nobel Prize in 1970, the first American to win the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. The award citation said Samuelson “has done more than any other contemporary economist to raise the level of scientific analysis in economic theory.”

Paul Samuelson died Sunday at 94. To read complete story, click here.

“Any Book, Anytime” Service at Your Library

December 9, 2009 by Susan Neilson

Are you looking for a particular book but the library doesn’t have it, and you’d rather spend your money on other things? Use Interlibrary Loan Services at your local public library. Best little known service around!

What is InterLibrary Loan?
If an item you’re looking for is not owned by Wake County Public Libraries and we are unable to offer an adequate substitution, we may be able to borrow the material from another library in the United States through a service called InterLibrary Loan (ILL). Through ILL it is possible for you to obtain books, microfilm, articles and other items.

  • You can place your ILL request online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • You can check the status of your ILL request online at any time.
  • You’ll be notified by email or U.S. mail when your request is ready for pick up at your library branch.
  • You don’t have to worry where the book or article is coming from – we will research it and find it for you, if we can.
  • You can borrow up to 4 titles at a time using this service.

Each library system may have their own method of ILL service. For more information about Wake County Libraries’ ILL services, click here. Or ask library staff next time you visit a branch.
